(Students in the 4:00 section have a draft of thoughts in your Canvas responses). 1. Name of book, author, link to a read aloud video. 2. Write a brief summary of the book. 3. Which definition of MC books does your book illustrate? Use specific examples to explain why. If it does not seem to meet any of these 3 definitions, explain why not. a) “Books by and about people of color” b) Literature about racial or ethnic minority groups that are culturally and socially different from the white Anglo-Saxon majority in the United States, whose largely middle-class values and customs are most represented in American literature (Norton, 1999, p. 580) c) Literature by and about people who are members of groups considered to be outside the sociopolitical mainstream of the United States (Sims Bishop, 1992, p. 39) 4. How would you classify your book in each of the two categories found here ? Use specific examples from the story to back up your assertions. 5. Lastly, listen to one of the links in the same chart and explain, with examples, why that book is in that category.

The story Mixed by Arree Chung is a colorful story about prejudice, diversity and waking up. It is a story about how a city of colors all thought that they were the best. Until one day, yellow and blue fell in love and became green. This opened up people’s eyes. This story isn't as sophisticated as other stories that we learned about in this unit. However, it is a simple way to teach children about being prejudiced and how when you accept people, life is easier and happier. The book sends a message about acceptance and diversity.
